Designing for Multimedia Archives – Training Event We solicit applications for attending a two-day tutorial on interfaces for multimedia lecture navigation offered within the framework of the EU inEvent project, “Accessing Dynamic Networked Multimedia Events”, www.inevent-project.eu.
Motivation
Now that microphones and cameras are ubiquitous, understanding how to design and build usable front ends for multimedia archives is an essential skill. The inEvent European project has just released open source software for handling multimedia archives, including facilities for search and recommendation. This free two-day event aims at presenting state-of-the-art research on multimedia recommender systems and navigation interfaces, specifically in the case of recordings of lecture or events. The tutorial will also identify key challenges to address in future research, and will stage a practical application with open source tools, thus promoting reusability and efficiency for validation and evaluation.
Participants will learn how to work with the inEvent software and think about the needs of users in a range of archive types from MOOCS and conference talks to business meetings. They will take as a starting point the novel interface for the well-known TED series of talks built using d3.js, and work together to experiment with various enhancements.
The event is equally suitable for students of interface design, those working on advances in multimedia processing who are interested in how they might be used, and developers looking to extend their repertoire of skills into this new area. Applicants should have experience with programming languages and other Web and/or app design skills, but do not need past experience of developing for multimedia. Particularly targeted are early researchers in the fields of multimedia recommendation and navigation interfaces, such as PhD students and early postdocs, who seek to complete their expertise.

Registration and travel grants
Applicants are invited to submit an expression of interest by Thursday, September 24, 2014. This should be sent by email to apbelis@idiap.ch. The application should consist of two PDF documents: a CV and a short statement (maximum 1 page) explaining why they want to attend. Preference will be given to applicants who are considering using the inEvent platform in their student or professional work. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by Friday, September 26, 2014.
A limited number of travel grants are available. To apply, please include an additional brief statement explaining why a grant is required.
Program
Day 1:
– Welcome and Introduction
– Overview of state-of-the-art research in capture, processing, recommendation, search and navigation interfaces through multimedia content
– Presentation of participants’ own research
– Presentation of the inEvent open-source tools
– Round table to identify key challenges and choose projects
Day 2:
– Team work on projects followed by demos from teams
– Winner announcement and wrap-up discussion
Lunch and coffee breaks will be offered to participants on both days.
